Newsletter of the Fraunhofer IST

Editorial

Dear reader,

In the final issue of the Newsletter for this year, we have once again compiled for you a number of highlights from the past few months. Among other things, you can find out how we, within the scope of the RAINBOW project, have developed compact hyperspectral sensors for small satellites, thereby enabling more precise agricultural practices. We introduce you to the SimVision project, in which we are working on AI-supported processes for the automated quality assurance of coated components. In our video, we explain how the COAD® process sustainably improves the adhesion of sealants, for example in bicycle gear drives. In addition, we report on ten years of successful cooperation with Taiwan and the Fraunhofer Innovation Platform FIP-SPE@FCU, which serves as the central point of contact for R&D collaboration between German and Taiwanese companies in Taiwan in the field of surface and production technology.

We sincerely hope that you enjoy reading this issue, and we wish you a pleasant Advent period and a peaceful festive season.

Highlights

German National Hydrogen Council pays a visit to Salzgitter

On 27th November, a delegation from the German National Hydrogen Council visited the Wasserstoff Campus Salzgitter. The National Hydrogen Council, which is comprised of 23 high-ranking experts from business, science and civil society, acts as an independent, non-partisan advisory body. The visit provided an opportunity to present the activities, expertise and innovative strength of the Campus at a national level.

Hyperspectral Earth observation from space

Climate change, increasingly frequent extreme-weather events and the growing demand for high-quality food are creating major challenges for agriculture worldwide. In order to secure yields while ensuring the efficient utilization of resources such as water, fertilizer and energy, farmers require ever more precise information regarding the condition of plants and soils. Hyperspectral remote sensing can provide crucial support here.

Plasma-activated water

In times of increasingly stringent hygiene and food-safety requirements, the need for effective but simultaneously environmentally-friendly disinfection methods is growing. One possible alternative to conventional disinfectants is provided by plasma-activated water. The Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films IST, in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Electron Beam and Plasma Technology FEP, has investigated the effectiveness and durability of this innovative solution, and has summarized the results in a study.

Climate protection as a business case

Compile an emissions balance sheet, evaluate climate-protection measures and implement the most efficient of these first: Researchers from three Fraunhofer institutes have developed a method with which companies from all sectors are able, based on scenarios, to evaluate their climate-protection measures in accordance with ecological and economic criteria.

New plasma system ensures reliable bicycle technology

In high-precision internal-gear hubs, all the components must function reliably within an extremely confined space - even in cases where the installation space does not allow the insertion of conventional shaft seals. Together the Fraunhofer IST, Rohloff AG, and the Danish plasma and corona equipment manufacturer Tantec A/S have now developed a solution that specifically improves the adhesion of these sealants.

Innovation boost for hydrogen technology

A research platform for hydrogen and fuel cell technologies is being built at the Lower Saxony Research Centre for Vehicle Technology (NFF) at TU Braunschweig. The aim is to comprehensively expand a gaseous and liquid hydrogen infrastructure to support both basic and application-oriented research in the field of energy storage and propulsion. Science Minister Falko Mohrs officially presented funding approvals to TU Braunschweig and the Fraunhofer IST.

From research

In this newsletter, our “From Research” section introduces you to the SimVsion project, in which the Fraunhofer IST is working together with Fraunhofer Institutes ITWM and IGD and the TU Wien on scalable approaches for AI-based visual inspection and methods for generating physical and synthetic training data.

A look behind the scenes – The COAD® process

How can the adhesion of sealants be reliably improved in confined spaces – and in a sustainable manner? The COAD® process developed by Fraunhofer IST provides the solution. Watch the video to learn how this innovative plasma technology works, using high-precision bicycle components as an example.

Fraunhofer IST goes international

In our new section “Fraunhofer IST goes international”, Dr. Ralf Bandorf, group leader for optical and electrical systems, reports on ten years of successful cooperation with Taiwan. The focus is on the “Fraunhofer Innovation Platform for Surface and Production Engineering for Optical and Electrical Systems at Feng Chia University – FIP-SPE@FCU”, which aims to develop cross-industry technological solutions in the field of surface and production engineering – especially for optical and electrical systems. As part of this cooperation, Fraunhofer IST supports German companies and Fraunhofer partners in gaining access to markets in Taiwan and Asia through an established network of reliable players.
