Newsletter of the Fraunhofer IST

Editorial

Dear reader,

Over the past few weeks, there have been several reasons to celebrate at Fraunhofer IST. We are particularly proud of our colleagues who received the Joseph von Fraunhofer Prize 2026. With the development of the EOSS® production system, they have created a unique coating technology for precision optical systems that is already being successfully deployed in industrial applications. Congratulations to the award winners and the entire team!

But that’s not all: A team of Fraunhofer IST employees, together with industry partners Rohloff AG and Tantec A/S, was among the finalists for the Technology Transfer Award 2026 from the Braunschweig Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK). The nomination recognizes the successful transfer of the COAD® plasma process into the industrial production of bicycle components and demonstrates once again how research results can be translated into practical applications.

There’s another reason to celebrate at our spin-off “Integrative Nanotech”. Two years after its launch, the company has continued to develop successfully and has reached important milestones in the market launch of its hydrogen sensor technology. In this interview, Dr. Hunter King reflects on the company’s development over the past few years, key achievements, and the challenges faced on the journey from research to business.

We hope you enjoy reading this issue and wish you a wonderful summer.

In focus: EOSS® – A new industrial production system for precision optical coatings

Stefan Bruns, Philipp Farr and Michael Vergöhl from the Fraunhofer IST in Braunschweig have developed a unique coating technology for precision optics systems that meets these requirements and is already in use in industry. Their efforts have earned them the Joseph von Fraunhofer Prize for 2026.

Highlights

Fraunhofer IST recertified as a Zukunftgeber

The Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films IST has once again been awarded the “Zukunftgeber” employer seal by the Employers' Association for the Braunschweig Region (Arbeitgeberverband, AGV). Following its initial certification in 2022 and its first recertification in 2024, this latest award once again confirms the institute’s high appeal as an employer in the region.

Fraunhofer IST expands process chain for high-performance boride coatings

Modern surface technologies play a central role in efficient, cost-effective, and resource-conserving production processes. This is precisely where the Fraunhofer IST comes in. With an expanded infrastructure, the institute can now map the entire process chain for the development of boride-based high-performance surfaces at its own site.

COAD® plasma process successfully implemented in bicycle component manufacturing

Employees of the Fraunhofer IST, as well as their industry partners Rohloff AG and Tantec A/S, were among the finalists for the 2026 Technology Transfer Award of the IHK Braunschweig. They were nominated for the transfer of the COAD® technology, which has been successfully implemented in bicycle component manufacturing.

Thin-film sensor technology for intelligent condition monitoring

Unplanned machine downtime, quality deviations, or wear-related failures rarely occur without warning signs, yet they often go undetected. The Fraunhofer IST makes exactly these hidden conditions visible: with integrated thin-film sensor technology that measures directly on the component surface. The institute will demonstrate how condition monitoring can be fundamentally improved as a result.

Successful completion of the PreCare field deployment in Namibia

The self-sufficient PreCare platform, mounted on a standard pickup truck, enables the deployment of medical care units in remote and hard-to-reach regions of southern Africa. For a further practical test, the mobile care unit was handed over to the N/a’an ku sê Foundation in December 2025 and tested during a field deployment in Namibia. This test deployment has now been successfully completed.

Precise measurement for better diamond coatings

Diamond coatings are considered a key technology for numerous industrial applications – from power electronics to optics to sensors. To enable these high-performance coatings to fully realize their potential, uniformity is crucial. Researchers at the Fraunhofer IST have developed a new measurement and analysis method that allows the optical constants of large-scale diamond films to be determined with high precision and efficiency.

Fraunhofer IST goes international

From vision to market: Two years after the launch of the Fraunhofer IST spin-off “Integrative Nanotech”, CEO Dr. Hunter King looks back on the company’s successes, challenges, and development in the field of hydrogen leak detection.
