Applications of precision optics

High-tech for practical applications

Modern sensor technology depends on precision and reliability – from autonomous vehicles and medical diagnostic devices to space applications. Fraunhofer IST transfers new coating processes from research into practical use, and thus enables optical filters that combine top performance with industrial scalability.

Key components of modern sensor systems

Optical filter systems are central components of modern sensor systems. In autonomous mobility, for example, they enable the precise spectral separation of signal and stray light in LiDAR systems or cameras. In medical engineering, they ensure high-resolution imaging and reliable diagnostic procedures. Fraunhofer IST sees itself as a bridge between fundamental research and industrial implementation. Together with industry partners, new coating processes are developed, optimized, and translated into scalable production solutions.

Wide range of applications

In addition to the automotive industry and medical engineering, the semiconductor industry, aerospace, and compact spectroscopy systems also benefit from precision optical coatings. Multilayer filters, laser-resistant protective coatings, or gradient coatings enable new generations of devices with higher performance and a more compact designs.

Precision optical coatings will continue to play a central role in numerous high-tech applications in the future. With its coating technologies and equipment platforms, Fraunhofer IST is helping to further develop this key technology and make itavailable for industrial use.

The goal is to combine innovative processes, digital process control, and scalable system concepts in such a way that high-precision optical coating stacks can be manufactured economically even in large quantities. In doing so, the institute also strengthens Europe’s technological sovereignty in a strategically important field of technology.

At the same time, new applications – for example  in aerospace, security-relevant systems, or modern sensor systems – are opening up additional opportunities for precision optical technologies.

Together with industry partners, Fraunhofer IST is working to drive these developments forward and to drive innovative coating solutions from research into industrial practice.
