Newsletter of the Fraunhofer IST

Editorial

Dear reader,

In this issue, we have not one but two special achievements to share with you: Firstly, the Fraunhofer IST has won first place in the OIC Manufacturing Challenge with a double-sided precision coating in roadrunner design, and secondly, the PreCare project team was delighted to receive the “Innovation for a Better Future” prize from the Fraunhofer Future Foundation, which was awarded for the first time. Congratulations to all the winners!

The “PreCare” project is also the subject of our new section “Fraunhofer IST goes international”. In future, this section will regularly contain reports regarding our institute’s global research projects and collaborations. We begin our journey in southern Africa. Within the framework of PreCare, a cost-effective, flexible and modular health platform for mounting on pickup trucks was developed. This enables preclinical examinations, tests and vaccinations to be performed in remote areas, such as the sub-Saharan region, thereby providing a contribution towards better global healthcare.

Diversity within a team is a crucial building block for creative solutions and excellent research. For this reason, the topic of diversity is particularly important to the employees of the Fraunhofer IST. We have produced a video to show you what this means for us in concrete terms.

Furthermore, we would like to draw your attention to our newly published Annual Report 2024. With our focus topic “The mobility transition - Innovative surface technology as the key to the circular economy”, we demonstrate how our surface technologies can play a decisive role in the development of durable, resource-conserving and recyclable solutions for mobility. The complete Annual Report is now available for download - it is well worth taking a look!

We hope you enjoy reading this Newsletter and wish you a very pleasant summer.

Highlights

HIPIMS 2025: Focusing on the future of coating technology

Whether in medical technology, electronics, or automotive manufacturing, the demands on functional coatings are constantly increasing. HIPIMS is a key technology for solving these challenges. The 15th International Conference on Fundamentals and Industrial Applications of HIPIMS, which took place in Braunschweig, focused on how this technology is developing and where it can be applied in the future.

Double-sided precision coating led to victory

With the utmost precision, the Fraunhofer IST has won this year’s Manufacturing Challenge at the Optical Interference Coatings Conference (OIC2025) in the USA. In this international competition, a spectroscopically precisely defined optical filter had to be manufactured as accurately as possible – a task that demands both creativity and the highest precision in design, production, and measurement technology.

Infrared optics for extreme demands

High-performance, environmentally stable infrared optics are essential for modern applications in analytics, security and aerospace. At LASER World of Photonics 2025, the Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films IST was presenting newly developed coating solutions that offer maximum precision and long-term stability – even under extreme conditions.

Medical Care – Health Platform for Pickup Trucks

Around the world, there is a lack of comprehensive medical care for people living in remote areas. Researchers at the Fraunhofer IST and ISE have devised a solution for this: a flexible, modular health platform. The team was presented with the Innovations for a Better Future award from the Fraunhofer-Zukunftsstiftung (Fraunhofer Future Foundation) for this development.

Hyperspectral imaging through integrated interference filters

For a long time, hyperspectral imaging was considered complex and space-consuming. New technologies are, however, now paving the way for compact and efficient solutions. Interference filters that can be integrated directly into CMOS image sensors enable customized spectral analyses in the smallest of spaces. They thereby open up new application possibilities in environmental monitoring and industrial quality assurance.

Thin-film sensor technology enables automated quality control in plastic injection molding

For the resource-conserving and, at the same time, economical production of plastic components, the utilization of intelligent, automated processes is crucial. At automatica, the Fraunhofer IST has been showcasing an innovative sensor system that records process data such as temperature and pressure in real time - directly in the tool.

Digital tools for industrial process development

Whether in vacuum coating or water treatment, simulations are indispensable tools for R&D. They make it possible to reduce the number of physical tests. Until now, however, their utilization has generally been reserved for specialized experts. The Fraunhofer IST is going to fundamentally change this - with a new approach that takes simulation out of the expert niche and transfers it directly into industrial practice.

Fraunhofer IST successfully contributes towards the publication of ISO standard 10678

Through its expertise, the Fraunhofer IST has provided a significant contribution towards the successful revision and publication of the international standard ISO 10678. The standard regulates the procedure for determining the photocatalytic activity of surfaces by means of the degradation of methylene blue under UV irradiation.

Kick-off for the BMBF project “CirProTech” at the OHLF

At the beginning of March, the third funding period commenced for the Open Hybrid LabFactory (OHLF) research campus, which is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). A funding volume of ten million euros will cover three major research projects over a duration of five years. A central component of this initiative is the “CirProTech” project, the kick-off meeting for which took place in Wolfsburg.

Fraunhofer IST goes international

In our new section “Fraunhofer IST goes international,” we will regularly present exciting projects that demonstrate how Fraunhofer IST creates sustainable solutions to global challenges through visionary research and targeted knowledge transfer. The first project to be featured is “PreCare”, an example of how applied research can improve lives worldwide.

As part of the “PreCare” project, a low-cost platform for mounting on pickup trucks was developed that enables preclinical examinations, tests, and vaccinations even in remote areas. In April 2025, a second platform manufactured entirely in Africa was put into operation as part of a program for the early detection and prevention of cervical cancer.

Further information about the project can be found on our “PreCare” page.

Diversity Day at the Fraunhofer IST

German Diversity Day is a nationwide day of action that highlights diversity in the workplace. It has been organized annually since 2012 by Charta der Vielfalt e. V. (Diversity Charter) and takes place in companies and institutions to demonstrate their commitment to diversity and remind us how important inclusion, appreciation, and equal opportunities are in the workplace and in our society. To mark the occasion, our employees at Fraunhofer IST were asked what diversity means to them. The result is a colorful mosaic of perspectives – cohesion, tolerance, togetherness, and much more.

For us, diversity means that everyone who wants to shape the future with us is welcome. Let's be different together.
