Fraunhofer ZESS represented at The Battery Show Europe 2026 for the first time

Press Release /

The Fraunhofer Center for Energy Storage and Systems ZESS present itself for the first time at Battery Show Europe 2026 from June 9 to 11, 2026. Together with other institutes, the center will be represented at the Fraunhofer Battery Alliance booth in Hall 1 (Booth 1-A47). The international trade fair is one of the key platforms for battery technologies, battery systems, and the industrial value chain surrounding energy storage in Europe.

The new Fraunhofer ZESS research building is currently still under construction.

Fraunhofer ZESS develops innovative, sustainable, and safe battery and hydrogen technologies. Its focus is on solid-state batteries as next-generation mobile and stationary storage solutions, as well as hydrogen technologies such as POWERPASTE. The goal is to transfer research results into industrial applications and actively shape the energy and mobility transition.

The center is supported by the Fraunhofer Institutes for Surface Engineering and Thin Films IST, for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials IFAM, and for Ceramic Technologies and Systems IKTS, in close cooperation with the Technical University of Braunschweig and the regional BLB+ network. Fraunhofer ZESS brings together scientific excellence across the entire value chain

The new research building is currently under construction at the Braunschweig Research Airport. Covering approximately 3,400 square meters, it will feature state-of-the-art laboratories, dry rooms (400 m²) with dew points down to -58 °C, and extensive testing and analysis infrastructure. This is complemented by flexible New Work environments. The CO₂-reduced wood-steel hybrid building, featuring a green roof and a photovoltaic system, serves as an example of sustainable research infrastructure.

The focus of the trade fair presentation is the introduction of this infrastructure as well as the presentation of the expertise being advanced at Fraunhofer ZESS by the participating institutes at the center. Using a model, visitors can already get a first impression of the future research center and its possibilities.

By participating in the trade fair, Fraunhofer ZESS emphasizes its commitment to closely integrating research and industrial application and making a significant contribution to the technological sovereignty of Germany and Europe in the field of energy storage.
