Newsletter of the Fraunhofer IST

Editorial

Dear reader,

At the beginning of the year, the focus at the Fraunhofer IST was directed on, amongst other things, the topic of “health”. The one-year test phase of the prototype of a mobile pre-clinical care platform was therefore launched at the beginning of March with the aim of ensuring comprehensive pre-clinical care in even the most remote areas of Africa. Furthermore, Fraunhofer researchers have succeeded in developing a new method for the production and clinical application of stem-cell-based retinal implants, which could contribute towards the successful treatment of a degenerative eye disease.

In our "From Research" section, we report on the current state of development in the field of "Green Tools" and present innovative sensor inserts for the digitalisation and monitoring of production processes.

"Sustainable process chains for the production of smart and resilient tools" and "Thin-film sensor technology for digital process monitoring" are also our topics at Hannover Messe 2023, to which we cordially invite you. Please do not hesitate to contact us and secure your free guest ticket. We look forward to seeing you!

Finally, we would like to draw your attention to our new section “In portrait”. Become better acquainted with the employees of the Fraunhofer IST and learn more about their work at the institute, their career paths or even one or two private details. To kick things off, we start with a woman in science and introduce you to one of our group leaders Dr Kristina Lachmann.

We hope that you enjoy reading this edition and wish you a very happy Easter.

Highlights

Health care in rural areas of the sub-Saharan region

With the aim of being able to ensure comprehensive preclinical care in even the most remote areas of Africa, researchers from the Fraunhofer institutes IST and ISE, in collaboration with Stellenbosch University and South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) in South Africa, have developed a mobile care platform which, on 3rd March 2023, was handed over to the NGO Rhiza Babuyile during a ceremonial event.

European project “TranSensus LCA” kicked-off in Brussels

The Fraunhofer LBF and the Fraunhofer IST jointly coordinates a Support and Coordinated Action aiming at defining and harmonising a commonly accepted and applied single Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach for zero-emission vehicles ZEV. Both institutes brought together 44 key stakeholders along the full value chain of zero-emission vehicles.

Controlled manufacture, storage and freezing of artificial retinal cells

Fraunhofer researchers have now developed a new method for the production and clinical application of stem-cell-based retinal implants, which could contribute towards the successful treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Their approach thereby is to replace damaged tissue with stem-cell-based transplants.

From research

In this newsletter, our “From research” section provides you with information on the possibilities offered by sensor inserts for the digitalization and monitoring of production processes, and on the performance capabilities already achievable by “green tools” today.

In portrait: Women in science

We would like to start our new series "In Portrait" by introducing our colleague Dr Kristina Lachmann. She heads the groups Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Processes and Medical Technology and Pharmaceutical Systems at the Fraunhofer IST. In this video you can see how her career at the institute progressed from student assistant to head of the two groups, how she balances her private life with two small children and her work as a group manager, and what advice she gives to young colleagues who are still at the beginning of their scientific careers.
