Data acquisition and digitization at the patient’s bedside

Digitalization as a success factor

Improving workflows, hygiene and protection against infection, optimizing medical care, saving costs and energy - data acquisition and digitalization also offer great potential for innovation and optimization at the patient's bedside. In data acquisition, sensory systems are of particular importance, e.g. for the recording of patient data, but also for the detection of environmental conditions. The long-term goal of the Fraunhofer IST is the creation of a digital twin of the patient's room. With this, various constellations can be tested quickly and cost-effectively in advance - not only concerning the optimal design of the room, but also with regard to the processes and conditions within the framework of healthcare research and under the premise of protection against infection.

Acquisition of environmental data for the optimization of well-being and the hygienic situation

The PALADIN simulation code developed at the Fraunhofer IST – originally developed for the modeling of coating processes – can be utilized for the optimization of room-air flows. In the patient room of the future, this expertise is to be used within the framework of an interdisciplinary collaboration with the aim of improving hygiene and optimizing the architecture. The goal is to model the spatial design of the patient room – prior to the practical implementation – in such a way that the risk of transmission through aerosol-borne germs is as low as possible. As a result, the safety of patients and staff can be increased and costs saved.

Data acquisition and simulation for optimized processes and energy consumption

In addition to the simulation of room-air flows, the Fraunhofer IST is also addressing the data acquisition and digitization of process flows. In the patient room, this knowledge can be transferred to processes in the hospital. In this way, processes and routes of hospital staff can be recorded and optimized. The direct connection to the Städtisches Klinikum Braunschweig thereby ensures practical relevance and immediate implementation. By monitoring the material flows, the sustainable and economic operation of a standard patient-care room can also be improved in terms of energy.

KARMIN - The patient room of the future

Follow the link to the website for the KARMIN project - The patient room of the future. KARMIN - This stands for Krankenhaus Architektur, Reinigung, Material und Infektion (hospital architecture, cleaning, material and infection). Three powerful collaborative partners from research and practice have joined forces to jointly implement the infection-preventive patient room of the future, and to conduct analyses, research projects and training.
