Newsletter of the Fraunhofer IST

Editorial

Dear reader,

Our first newsletter of 2024 addresses a topic that we are all increasingly concerned with: “Sustainability“. Find out what sustainable alternative to cost- and material-intensive lithium batteries the Fraunhofer IST is working on, what role our Head of Sustainability Management and Life Cycle Engineering will play in the Association for Sustainability and Eco-Management Professionals VNU e.V. in the future and learn about the institute's new training program “think GREEN, act SMART: Introduction to sustainability for companies“.

We would also like to introduce you to our new spin-off “S Mile Solutions“. The start-up has set itself the goal of improving the living conditions and prospects of people in remote areas of the sub-Saharan region with infrastructure-based services. The preliminary work that led to the spin-off is described in our research article “PreCare“.

Finally, we would like to draw your attention to some events. Visit us at the Hannover Fair, for example, where we will be presenting our latest developments in the field of thin-film sensor technology. Please get in touch with us and secure your free visitor ticket. Furthermore, the next edition of our online format “TransferTalk“ on the topic of sustainability will take place on May 13, 2024, to which we would also like to invite you. Sustainability will also be the topic of the KREIS Competence Center's transfer event on May 30, 2024. Our Institute Director, Prof. Dr. Christoph Herrmann, will discuss the question “Circular economy - is the future running smoothly?“ in his keynote speech at the free networking event. Perhaps you will have the opportunity to attend one or other of the events. We would be delighted to meet you there in person.

We hope you enjoy reading this issue and wish you a happy Easter.

Highlights

Pressure and temperature measurement in rolling contacts

The measurement of pressure and temperature plays a crucial role in various technical applications from rolling bearings to gears and seals. At the Hannover Messe from April 22 – 26, 2024, the Fraunhofer IST will be presenting a newly developed thin-film multi-sensor that enables pressure and temperature measurements even under mixed friction and high loads.

Sensory tool inserts enable quality control during injection molding

At Hannover Messe from April 22 – 26, 2024, the Fraunhofer IST will be presenting real-time data acquisition directly during the running process using integrated and wear-resistant thin-film sensors. The special feature here is that the tribologically resistant multifunctional sensor systems are deposited directly on the tool surface, enabling measurement in the main load zones.

Association work in the field of sustainability and environmental management

Prof. Dr. Stephan Krinke, Head of Sustainability Management and Life Cycle Engineering at the Fraunhofer IST, was appointed to the Advisory Board of the Association for European Sustainability and Eco-Management Professionals, VNU e. V..

Help for the last mile in the sub-Saharan region

No clean water, no functioning electricity grid, no primary healthcare – a scenario that is not uncommon in remote areas of the sub-Saharan region. The founding of “S Mile Solutions (Pty) Ltd”, a spin-off of the Fraunhofer IST and ISE, is seeking to change this. The start-up provides smart, small-scale and off-grid infrastructure solutions that are mounted on commercially available pick-up trucks, thereby enabling institutions to access rural and remote communities.

Production technologies for low-cost and safe aluminum-ion batteries

In the joint project “BALU - Production technology for battery cell concepts on the basis of aluminum-ion technology”, a consortium is further developing the aluminum-graphite dual-ion battery (AGDIB). As a result of its high power density, AGDIB technology has tremendous potential in the area of highly dynamic load requirements and could be an alternative to cost- and material-intensive lithium batteries.

From research

In this newsletter, you can read about the Fraunhofer IST's contribution to healthcare in rural areas of Africa in our “From research“ section.
