The cooperation agreement for the Wasserstoff-Campus Salzgitter was signed by (f.l.) Dr. Ulrike Witt (Office for regional state development), Dr. Jens Sprotte (ALSTOM Transport Deutschland GmbH), Jan Van den Houte (ALSTOM Transport Deutschland GmbH), Oberbürgermeister Frank Klingebiel (City of Salzgitter), Rainer Krause (WEVG Salzgitter), Mark Grunewald (MAN Energy Solutions SE), Prof. Dr.-Ing. Heinz Jörg Fuhrmann (Salzgitter AG), Michael Gensicke (Robert Bosch Elektronik GmbH), Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christoph Herrmann (Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films IST), Prof. Dr.-Ing. Arno Kwade (Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films IST), StS Matthias Wunderling-Weilbier ((Lower Saxony ministry for federal and European affairs and regional development) and Dr. Frank Fabian (Alliance for the region).

In the fall of 2019, the idea of building a hydrogen campus in Salzgitter began to mature. In addition to Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel, the initiators were Prof. Dr.-Ing. Heinz Jörg Fuhrmann, Chairman of the Executive Board of Salzgitter AG; Matthias Wunderling-Weilbier, now State Secretary at the Niedersächsisches Ministerium für Bundes- und Europaangelegenheiten und Regionale Entwicklung (Lower Saxony ministry for federal and European affairs and regional development); and Stefan Klein, member of the Lower Saxony State Parliament.

The starting point for the Wasserstoff-Campus was formed by the diverse experiences and projects of the industrial companies located nearby concerning the production and utilization of hydrogen. The start has now been made possible by the 7-million-euro structural assistance from the third pillar of the structural-assistance program, made available to the city of Salzgitter by the State of Lower Saxony.

Once the idea had been born, cooperation partners and politicians in Salzgitter invested a considerable amount of time and energy in the development of a viable concept for the Wasserstoff-Campus. This concept should make a significant contribution towards the economic strengthening and sustainable development of Salzgitter as an industrial and innovation location and of the entire region.

“The signing is an important step forwards on the path to the Wasserstoff-Campus and is a commitment to Salzgitter as a business location, where jobs with prospects are to be created in the future. The transformation process of the companies is in full swing,” emphasized Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel. “All the cooperation partners have expressed their earnest intention to work together to make the Wasserstoff-Campus a success.”
