The Fraunhofer IST at the Hannover Messe 2019 under the motto ”Tomorrow's Industry #WHATSNEXT” on the occasion of the 70th birthday of the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft.

On March 26, 1949, the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft was founded and celebrates its 70th birthday this year. The motto of the anniversary year: 70 years of Fraunhofer. 70 years of future. #WHATSNEXT

For the Fraunhofer IST, the anniversary of the founding was a cause for celebration as well. On that note, director Prof. Dr. Günter Bräuer gave a talk about ”Quantum jumps and the missing colors of the sun” in front of his staff. Following that, the institute’s directors Professor Bräuer and Professor Herrmann both cut the birthday cake, which was decorated with the spectrum of sunlight including the differently labeled absorption lines found by the society’s eponym Joseph von Fraunhofer 200 years ago.

The appearance of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in the context of this year's Hannover Messe was also marked by the jubilee. Under the motto ”Tomorrow's Industry #WHATSNEXT”, the Fraunhofer IST was once again part of the international industrial fair at two of the overall three joint Fraunhofer booths.

As one of 40 different Fraunhofer institutes and establishments, the IST was located in hall 6 at the booth for ”Digital Solutions and New Materials” and presented research findings on the simulation of coating processes as well as thin-film sensor systems for the measurement of characteristics in high-load areas of production facilities, wear-resistant antifouling and anti-adhesion coatings, solutions for friction reduction and wear protection for engine parts, machine parts, and tools, and findings in the field of cold plasma spraying. At the main Fraunhofer booth in hall 2, the Fraunhofer IST showcased the diverse range of applications of the multifunctional thin-film sensor system developed in the institute. It can be used, for example, to measure force directly on the complex-shaped mechanical connection between tractor unit and trailer, the so-called kingpin.
