Physical-chemical evaluation processes encounter their limits when the effects of photocatalytic processes on biological systems have to be recorded. This requires microbiology methods that capture and measure decomposition reactions, deactivation processes and effects on the environment under defined conditions. Bacteria, fungi and algae serve as biological test systems here.
Fraunhofer IST is working on the development of a photocatalytic growth inhibition test based on DIN 38412. In addition, Fraunhofer IST is cooperating closely with the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB in Stuttgart and the Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology IME in Schmallenberg.
