48th meeting of the Industry Working Group on Tool Coatings and Cutting Materials (IAK)

On June 9, 2026, the Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films IST will host the 48th edition of the Industrie-Arbeitskreis Werkzeugbeschichtungen und Schneidstoffe (IAK) (english: Industry Working Group on Tool Coatings and Cutting Materials) in Braunschweig. This established working group brings together experts and managers from industry, research and development, offering a platform for practical exchange on current challenges, innovations, and future trends in tool coating and machining technology.

The IAK 2026 will focus on new developments in machining technology for aircraft construction. The main topics include:

  • New tool concepts
  • Cutting techniques
  • Machining of lightweight materials
  • CVD diamond
  • Modern CVD technologies
  • Machining of high-strength materials
  • Hard machining
  • Plasma processes
  • Simulation

The program includes specialist presentations by experts from Airbus, CemeCon, Extreamet, Hemo, Platit, Gühring, and Boehlerit, as well as from science and research, including the Technical University of Hamburg and Fraunhofer IST. Dr. Sarah Baron will represent Fraunhofer IST at the presentations:

The event will be complemented by an informal get-together on the evening of June 8, 2026, in downtown Braunschweig, which will provide an opportunity for personal exchange and networking. Also on June 8, the 31st meeting of the INPLAS “Tools” working group will take place at Fraunhofer IST, a service offered by the INPLAS Competence Network Industrial Plasma Surface Technology e.V. for its members, to which non-members are also cordially invited to participate on a “trial” basis.

The open industry working group is aimed at companies and experts involved in hard and super-hard cutting materials, tool coatings, and their industrial applications. The event is jointly organized by Fraunhofer IST, Fraunhofer IPK, the Institute for Machine Tools and Factory Management (IWF) at TU Berlin, and the INPLAS Competence Network Industrial Plasma Surface Technology e.V.. Further information on the program and registration is available via the registration form provided.
