Functional coatings for weather satellites

At the Fraunhofer IST the coating systems and coating processes for CFRP components forthe new generation of weather satellites were developed.


Gas-flow sputtered thermal barrier coatings

Ceramic thermal barrier coatings for highly stressed components can be produced with the gas-flow sputtering technique (GFS) developed at the Fraunhofer IST.


Environment-friendly metallization of CFRP

At the Fraunhofer IST waveguide antennas made of CFRP were electrolytically metallized in order to give them adequate electrical and thermal conductivity.



At the Fraunhofer IST coated parts started from Japan into space for a trip to the asteroid 1999 JU-3.


Optical filter for space applications

With the new EOSS® coating platform, developed and built at the Fraunhofer IST, highly demanding optical coatings for space applications can be deposited.


Rotor testing technology

A monitoring system of based on a piezoresistive thin-film sensor has been developed at the Fraunhofer IST in collaboration with the Institute of Flight Systems (FT) of the German Aerospace Center.


Metallized carbon fibers

As a composite material, CFRP is galvanically metallized and used as waveguide antennas for satellite applications. This method has now been further developed to the point that even individual fiber bundles can be metallized and used for certain applications.


BepiColombo mission

Mercury is the smallest and innermost planet of our solar system. The ESA and JAXA are now planning the joint BepiColombo mission to collect new information about this virtually unknown planet. Coated parts from the Fraunhofer IST will be on board.
