Water purification and treatment

Diamond electrodes can have various geometries.

Cell system using a bipolar arrangement of diamond electrodes for wastewater treatment.
  Description

The Fraunhofer IST has developed diamond-coated electrodes for wastewater treatment and water disinfection. These are distinguished by extreme chemical resistance and also by their high overvoltage for the electrolysis of water. Thus it is possible to create oxidizing agents (in particular hydroxyl radicals) with high electrical efficiency directly in the water to be treated without the need for further chemicals. Nearly all organic and a range of inorganic contaminants in the affected water can be destroyed by the hydroxyl radicals. Additionally the hydroxyl radicals kill on contact germs already present in the water. The particular properties of the diamond electrodes make them suited to use in electrochemical synthesis and galvanizing.

  Our services

The Fraunhofer IST is developing diamond electrodes and electrode modifications. Together with our partners we can offer the development of diamond electrode based systems for water treatment, matched to your specific requirements. This encompasses carrying out feasibility studies, investigating process data as the basis for an economic feasibility study, installing the process, and integrating it into an overall water treatment concept.

    Advantages for customers

Diamond electrodes allow those contaminants in wastewater that are particularly difficult to reduce to be removed efficiently and at high electrical efficiency. Combining their use with conventional biological and physical methods enables the realization of new concepts in wastewater treatment as alternatives to e.g. incineration.

    Our competencies

At the Fraunhofer IST on one hand we are developing diamond electrodes for electrode systems while on the hand we can optimize operating parameters for application specific problems.
