Newsletter of the Fraunhofer IST

Editorial

Dear reader,

Hydrogen on a world tour and knowledge regarding water on the water - discover what this is all about in our current Newsletter. We explain how green hydrogen is to be transported cost-efficiently from Australia to Germany, and introduce you to the floating knowledge platform, the Braunschweig floating dock “Oker Space”.

You can also look forward to an article from the field of research on our institute’s new nanoindentor and take a look behind the scenes of a research institution: In an interview, the head of our IT department explains what his work at the Fraunhofer IST entails and how it will change in the future through the application of artificial intelligence. In the fifth installment of our video series “In portrait”, we provide you with an insight into the field of “Tribological Systems”, this time with our colleague Markus Mejauschek.

We wish you enjoyable reading and a pleasant and sunny fall.

Highlights

Floating knowledge platform Oker Space

The knowledge platform floating on Braunschweig’s Oker river provides visitors with information in the form of posters which focus on the fields of education, water-treatment technologies and ecological sustainability. “Sauberes Wasser durch Diamant” (Clean water through diamond) is the topic with which the Fraunhofer IST is participating; on the raft, the institute provides an overview of its expertise in the field of water treatment by means of diamond technology. The floating dock will remain open to the public until end-October.

Scalable electrolyzers using innovative materials for hydrogen export to Germany

Shipping the sunshine – How can green hydrogen be transported cost-efficiently from Australia to Germany? This question is being addressed by the Fraunhofer IST in collaboration with German and Australian project partners.

New professorship links Fraunhofer IST and TU Braunschweig

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sabrina Zellmer, Head of Department at the Fraunhofer IST, has taken on not one but two new functions simultaneously. In April, Prof. Zellmer was appointed Professor for Battery and Fuel-Cell Process Technology at the TU Braunschweig. In addition, she has held the position of Deputy Director of the Fraunhofer IST since 1st July 2023.

From research

In this newsletter, you will learn how a hardness test of ultrathin coatings is carried out in our "From research" section and get an insight into the work of our IT department.

In portrait: Research on tribological systems

At the Fraunhofer IST we are working on coatings and surfaces for sustainable products and production systems. Our colleague Markus Mejauschek is a research associate in the department "Tribology and Sensor Technology" and is concerned with the development of durable and thus sustainable products such as components or tools. In the fifth part of our series "In portrait" he gives an insight into his everyday work - researching tribological systems for more sustainability by optimizing friction and wear.
